Josh Kalis: It's Official from Alien Workshop Skateboards to DGK Skateboards

The two original Philly skateboarders are reunited, back again as partners back to back.

It's not official from Alien Workshop or DGK (beside a leaked board graphic), but Josh Kalis has left Alien to reunite with his homie Stevie Williams on DGK. I caught up with Josh to ask him about the change and what happened with Alien and here's what he said...

I was just wondering how the whole DGK thing came about.
Me and Stevie were just talking one day and were saying, "Man, we gotta team back up on somethin'," you know? We were talking about how just stale skateboarding was and how people just don't really hang out with each other anymore. They just kind of skate for companies, whether it be because it's just a cool company or it's a solid paycheck. Whatever, you know? We were just talking about how skateboarding just lost its vibe of friendship and lifestyle, you know? DGK's vibe was always just that—like, this is our life and we roll together and this is what we do—skateboarding is bringing us together. Stevie and I hadn't rode for the same thing forever and we were just like, "Man, we gotta do something like that," and it escalated into, "Why don't we just roll on the same squad? The DGK squad?" because that's what we are...we're old Love Park cats, you know?

How long have you guys know eachother?
We've known one another since the early '90s.

Since he was Lil' Stevie, right?
Yeah, he was lil' Lil' Stevie.

So, how did everything end up with Alien, then?
It wasn't hard. Nobody made it more difficult than what it needed to be. I just told them that this is what I wanted to do—this is what I'm going to do—and it was almost as if they knew it was coming at some point, you know?

Were there things you were unhappy with at Alien? Or did you just want to get back to that homey connection of being back with your friends?
I wanted to skate for fun and with a friend...go back to the homie connection, you know? Me and Alien just grew apart. You know, I felt like I was Alien Workshop, through and through, for 15 years—that's what I was. Alien Workshop was Sovereign Sect and it just grew into something that I wasn't growing with. Me and Workshop had a long run, but we just grew apart from one another.

Skateboarding: 20 Years in the making for Jino Guevara

Wow! I can't believe its been quite along time since getting my first skateboard, doing that first push on my board. I still remmember the good ol' days. I'd just recently turned 20 years old, and I know I'm starting to think will I last long enough on my skateboard. The answer indeed is yes, the downside only is I'm getting prone to more injuries lately, I've been suffering muscle pains alot, starting to get ankle issues and I rarely do stretches before skateboarding which I intended to change for a better future on skateboarding. But nothing stops me from getting what I want on my skateboard.

Time flies so fast, and I still remmember way back 2003, I was 13 got my first skateboard, did my first ollie and boom! learned different tricks as months go by. After months of skateboarding, I'd had my first major injury which I broke my left radius, snapped it into an S Shape and I was out for almost 7 months, then therapy which almost took me 5 months more, so pretty much a year out. It kinda slowed me down for quite awhile and I was thinking if I can be back on my board again sooner or later. My mom was quite shocked when she hear me " Mom I want to be back on my skateboard again." which she doesn't want to happen anymore. During those tough times, I was so devestated I did recovered but I can't skate because of my mom. So what I did, I go to some spots just to skate. Borrowed skateboards, and felt that vibe again. Also the worst happen for me, the downfall of my mom which bankrupt her, and we lost our house, mom got unemployed, I got no money to buy a good setup during those times. I kinda felt bad for her. But I know she got alot of plans way ahead of time.

After the recent downfall, I got back again on my skateboard. Which I told my mom straight and I promised to be more carefull, which I did. I bought a new setup around 2004, and It's a huge comeback for me. But I was rusty as hell, so relearned alot and had the patience for it. As days months and years go by. I started to get my confidence back again which helped me to progress. I'd looked up to some people and asked myself, " why are they so good?". At first every skateboarders dream is to be sponsored, earn money from skateboarding, have a pro model shoe or deck, travel the world, eat good food everyday and go partying all night long. But I'd did tried my best, but since things happen for a reason, I'd never got sponsored my a major company or skateshop. The only thing happened to me is to ride for a local skateboard clothing apparel here in the Philippines and have good discounted deals on skate shops, which helped me to survive and had a good set up from time to time. I'd did felt contented on it, and accepted that I'm not as talented as the good skateboarders out there, but I got a bag of tricks in my hand that I can do.

Now at 20, what can I say? I can say I became more mature, learned from my mistakes, mellowed my attitude and enjoy my life as I can. I'd just love skateboarding, since day 1 I felt inloved pushing my board, it gave me a better feeling, I became a better person, and for sure without skateboarding, I must been a negative person, hanged out with the wrong crowd. So I'm still here on my journey to push my skateboard until I can. Skate safe and live life always.

Product Review: Fury Evo II

Thank God, I have a good trucks lately after using my Monster Trucks for a mind daggering 5 months I think, and it was the worst 5 months ever, Like I'm having problems on my tricks because of my trucks, also the bushings, kingpins and the turning of my trucks kinda suck that time. After awhile I've been using my new Fury Evo II trucks and everything was picture perfect.

I've been using Fury trucks before, and It was the Evo I'd never had any problems on it as I remember, I had it for a year only thing happened to it was it's very grinded and I sold it to a friend who badly needed trucks for skating. Now it's Evo II more functional than ever, the trucks hangar is still the same as the old one, but the baseplate has a new makeover, it's more like a Venture baseplate which its more flatter and the sliders at the mount were perfect allignment on its pivot. It has a stock Bones Bushing which is a good one, also it has a different bushing design, it doesn't have bushing caps when you see it it's more like a newly design.

After my first week of using them I've manage to do my tricks very good and I'm much more consistent on them for the long run, But the no factor on this trucks were the bushing, as I said it has no bushing caps since it's more different design, I got to destroy my rear bushings from the abuse of skateboarding. (Maybe I'd just skate heavily or do my tricks all the time.) And I didn't noticed it at first until the turning started to change and I've seen it destroyed, so I manage to get some bushing caps, the top and bottom ones and a Lucky Soft Bushings, well it did it's job and I say it became a more better trucks to use for skateboarding.

So far Bushings was just minor problems, But my trucks still going good for me, and I'll still use them until they break. I've tried to give some suggestions to you guys, if your planning to get Evo II please be ready to change your bushing, I wish the people on Fury get some response on the bushings, and I still prefer the bushings on their previous Evo one's its more good. Oh yeah, I'd never change bushing on my first Evo's and thats one good truck indeed.

Overall I suggest you guys to use Evo II's more responsive on turning and hella light indeed. Much more lighter than the previous Evo. Also price wise it's not that expensive for a truck usually It's around 2,400-2,500 Php so it's worth the money indeed.

I suggest you to look for this trucks on my friend's skateshop.

Spot Check: Pelota Court

It's been how many years since I've started skateboarding way bag early 2000's as most of the skateboarders we all start from our backyards, lawns, garages or just vacant spot where concrete is laid below our feet and skateboard. As we progress and get informations about places where to skate, I realized that we should look for other places to ensure of joy for skateboarding. I still remember the first time I ever stepped my foot on Pelota Court the summer of 2002.

I was greeted my friendly locals during that time, But some I see very focused. Well if your a beginner you don't mind people on their stuffs, because you just skate. Cruising around doing what so ever stuffs you want to do. Boardslides on the rails or just doing a Kickflip on the flat. But the moment I start cruising down, I felt this vibe that I've been doing. Skateboarding was on it's best.

As days go by, I still manage to see people skateboarding there, until I became a regular to a local. People manage to get along with me during my first weeks or months skateboarding there, I've manage to learn alot of stuffs that I've really wanted that time from BS 180s to Pop Shove Its, Until I've manage to get my confidence level back. Then time came that I've get along with them, and started to see something which skateboarding has to offer. The energy that keeps me going even though I fail, bail or break bones. I still skate, that's the bottom line. I've been skating on Pelota for quite along time, as one of the remaining originals from the start. I offer everyone a warm welcome what Pelota Court has to offer.

So far currently built are a 13-inch high Grind box which has a length of 7 Feet, A 5 Foot Quarter pipe and a wide Quarter pipe. On the other side, Pelota is under it's operational build up. We are still managing to have a Banks, Funbox and other obstacles to be added.

During the early years, we have manage to put up a Funbox, Rails and other stuffs, but after a long time obstacles are destroyed. But hopefully it goes well as the years go by. December of 2009 will be the starting of new obstacles, but so far we are doing mild repairs for the cracks and slubs on the concrete. and some major cleaning work to do.

Photographs: Frozen moment on time.

As we all know, photographs have been a part of our human culture way back ages ago.

Even though many people still do it from the time the first camera was ever produced and used,

until now which many cameras could be bought on a reasonable and wide price ranges for every one.

Skateboarding and Photography has been always something been united way back from the 50's,

As I remember reading from an article that the first ever photograph which featured skateboarding

was on LIFE magazine and the skateboarder was doing a handstand, Well it was a milestone until now.

Many people always think that photos are nothing, but for me and as a skateboarder, its very important.

Seeing is believing as I always believe in. From paranormal stuffs, to celebrity photos, to undiscovered places.

Photos are the way to see something unique, as well as being creative and resourceful on the way.

I still remember the first time my friend took a photo of me while skateboarding was I was doing a nosegrind

on the grindbox way back years ago. I was stoked, as well as loving every moment while looking at it.

Still he was just randomly taking photos of me, but I believe it was a work of art, even though the camera

isn't the best on the market, but the moment that shot, felt the best of it. Until now I still have that photo,

just hanging out on my wall. Photographs indeed made myself creative and progressive.

As years go by, day by day. I always love what I do, from skating, or taking photographs or just holding a camera

and thinking about the stuffs that I wanted to take a photo of it, I remember talking with my cousin,

and she told me the best photographers doesn't rely on the expensive ones, the high end ones,

all they have is patience and dedication. DSLR's are cool, but I still prefer the SLR's since it more

challenging and more exciting in a way that photos will be more interesting.

Well for me as a newbie photographer, I know I still have to learn alot, I still going to buy a camera,

I still need to look for something, will I be sticking to skateboarding photography? or go with fashion,

nature or other things on life that can be photographed on.

But I still have an answer, whenever and wherever on life, I still got a skateboard and camera beside of me,

I'll take all the photos that could be interesting not just for me, but for all the people who is interested

on photography.
